A few back rhinoceros apparently survive here, and there are healthy populations of kudu, sable, suni and warthog, as well as smaller numbers of nyala and buffalo. The birdlife is rich in areas of evergreen thicket along the rivers. Human settlements in the southern part of the reserve pose a threat to its long-term viability. Location: Southern Malawi; south of Blantyre. Access: From Blantyre follow the main road southwards towards Bangula (m1), continuing to the end of the tar; turn right and travel for a short distance to the reserve's gate. Permission to enter the reserve must be obtained in advance. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended. Accommodation: Mwabvi Camp has 2 2-bed rondavels and a small camping site, with basic ablution facilities and open wood fire for cooking. Matope camping site accommodated 6 people but has no facilities. Other facilities: A 23 km network of game-viewing roads; walking is allowed; guides can be hired. Open: April to December.
